Message from the Chair
What an exciting time to study Journalism and Creative Media Industries!
Sure, journalism is changing, growing, evolving—but it's more important than ever. The ways that people get their news continues to shift rapidly in the 21st century, with more and more apps, devices, platforms constantly popping up. And the speed with which news and information spreads is also rapidly increasingly. But despite all these changes, the craft of journalism, newsgathering, and reporting remains crucial to our society. Through both classwork and involvement in student organizations and extracurricular activities, JCMI faculty and staff work hard to make sure our students are getting all the tools and training they need to be successful not just today but for the years to come.
Likewise, the Creative Media Industries are constantly expanding! Creative media content of all forms flows across screens big and small, and the boundaries between TV, film, gaming, and radio have turned into one big blur. And just like news and information, the ways we get our entertainment content is also evolving and expanding. Our Department emphasizes storytelling across all these legacy and emerging media platforms and genres. We also work to make sure our students understand the “industry” and business structure that supports all this. By integrating both creativity and this industry perspective, we make sure our students graduate with the skills to be both creators and leaders in the creative media industries.
The classes you'll take as a JCMI student give you the hands-on practical experience, critical-thinking skills, and an overview of the Journalism and Creative Media Industries that you'll need to be successful. Our students learn both inside and outside the classroom, and they hone their skills and knowledge in settings like on-location media productions, newsrooms, study abroad experiences, “study away” excursions, internships, and more. We want our students to be involved and learning about their future career field from the time they come to TTU, to graduation day, and beyond.
Our alumni are proof that what we're doing works! There's no limit to the types of jobs that JCMI grads have found, and some of them might surprise you. Our alumni are working in places you'd expect—newsrooms, video production companies, movie sets. But they're also working in a wide variety of corporate settings, freelancing, and more. More importantly, JCMI alumni love to give back and connect with our students to help grow their knowledge, skills, and professional connections.
We'd love to have you be part of all the exciting things that are going on in the Department of Journalism & Creative Media Industries! Please do reach out with any questions and learn more about how you can be part of JCMI.
