Texas Tech University

Energy Management

Energy Management monitors campus energy use and develops strategies to optimize and plan energy efficiency in campus buildings. Energy Management tracks building performance to recommend efficiency improvements related to operations, lighting, water, and utility systems.

Energy Efficiency

In partnership, Energy Management and Environmental Systems Maintenance (ESM) continue to work very hard towards Energy Committed Goals. Every year for the past 11 years, Energy Management and ESM have helped reduce the yearly energy consumption usage by the campus compared to the baseline. The goals are met by using different techniques to help control the environment in classrooms and office spaces. During warm weather, the steam is turned off for
the season to minimize the use of chilled water and steam. In colder weather, outside air is used to maintain a comfortable atmosphere and lower the amount of chilled water usage. Because of this, the partnership between Energy Management and ESM has helped Texas Tech University be established as one of the “Top Energy-Saving Campuses” in APPA.

Energy Use Index FY 2000-2022

The Office of Energy Management benchmarks energy use by calculating the Energy Use
Index (EUI). The EUI is calculated from the total energy (electricity, natural gas, and imported
steam) consumed by Texas Tech University expressed as thousands of British Thermal
Units (BTUs) divided by the Occupied Square Foot for conditioned spaces only.

Reports

Since the Office of Energy Management was created, Texas Tech University has saved over
$27 million in energy costs. Savings continued to be achieved even with increased energy
intensive spaces and increased student enrollment.

Control Center

Operations Control Center performs skilled work in monitoring environmental control
equipment, energy management, energy efficiency programs, and property/life safety
alarms for Texas Tech University facilities. Control Center operators troubleshoot HVAC
controls from the building automation system (BAS) front end and assist technicians who
are working in the field. ODCC is on campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it serves as
the main contact for after-hours facility requests.
